Newfoundland: Off the Beaten Path
Tentative Itinerary:
Day 1: Sun., July 1 –The tour will depart from Orillia at 8:15a.m., the Barrie, Kozlov Mall at 8:45a.m. & the Tour Office at 9:15a.m. (Overnight parking is available at our office.) We will fly on Air Canada from Pearson Airport to St. John's the capital city of Newfoundland for a 3-night stay at the Capitol Hotel. This evening there will be a Welcome Dinner at our hotel. Weather permitting we will enjoy the Canada Day Fireworks at Quidi Vidi which will conclude our day. (Dinner)
Day 2: Mon., July 2 –This morning we will have a guided city tour of St. John’s, which will include Signal Hill & Cape Spear National Historic Site, the most easterly point in North America. There will be free time over lunch hour for shopping or exploring the city. In the afternoon we will visit the Newfoundland Provincial Museum known as The Rooms. (Breakfast)
Day 3: Tues., July 3 –This morning we will visit Petty Harbour, a traditional Irish Newfoundland fishing community enroute to Bay Bulls. We’ll enjoy a 2 hour Whale watching boat cruise, which includes viewing the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, home to hundreds of puffins, followed by lunch at Gattheral’s. We’ll then continue along the Irish Loop making stops along the way at the communities of Cape Race, where we will visit the Myrick Wireless Interpretation Centre (the first distress signal was received here from the ill-fated Titanic) Trepassey, St. Stephen’s & St. Mary’s before returning to our hotel in the late evening. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)
Day 4: Wed., July 4 - Today we will turn back time to the mid 1950’s in Newfoundland as we travel to Woody Island - a community that was resettled during the time of Joey Smallwood. We will leave our coach at Garden Cove and travel by boat (a short 45 min. trip) to the rustic resort. The island offers trails for hiking, home cooked food, traditional Newfoundland music, the chance to row a dory, kayak and enjoy true Newfoundland hospitality. (B, L, D)
Day 5: Thurs., July 5 –After a hearty breakfast we will travel by boat to Muddy Hole on Sound Island another resettled community. There will be time to hike around the cove before enjoying a Boil-up on the beach (picnic) with traditional Newfoundland music. We will arrive in Garden Cove by 3:30p.m. and then travel through Terra Nova National Park, past Gambo to Gander. This evening we’ll arrive in Gander at Sinbad’s Hotel for our 2 night stay. (B, L, D)
Day 6: Fri., July 6 - Today we will travel to Twillingate to explore this beautiful outport community. Twillingate is an excellent vantage point for iceberg & whale sightings in June & July. We will have a noon lunch at the Anchor Inn. This afternoon we will visit the Prime Berth Fishing Museum, Twillingate Museum & Long Point Lighthouse. (B & L)
Day 7: Sat., July 7 –This morning we will visit the Mary March Regional Museum in Grand Falls-Windsor to learn about the now-extinct Beothuk Indians of Newfoundland. In the afternoon we will visit: King’s Point Pottery, the Whale Museum, Rattling Brook Falls, Mrs. Thom’s General Store and enjoy an evening of entertainment at the “Music & Friends Dinner Theatre” before traveling onto Corner Brook. We will be staying at the charming, historic Gleynmill Inn in Corner Brook for 2 nights. (B & D)
Day 8: Sun., July 8 –Today we’ll visit Cook’s Lookout in Corner Brook before heading south to Stephenville for lunch. From there we will drive out to Port au Port Peninsula – locally known as the French Shore, this area remains the French hub of Newfoundland. Today we will discover such villages as Cape St. George, Three Rock Cove and Lourdes before returning to our hotel. (B & L)
Day 9: Mon., July 9 –Today may become your favourite day of the tour. This morning we will depart for Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will marvel at the spectacular ocean scenery, mountains and fjords. Our day will include: Rocky Harbour, Lobster Cove Lighthouse and Photographers Lookout. We will be staying at the Oceanview Hotel in Rocky Harbour for 2 nights. Tonight is a special treat as we enjoy the “Pub Night featuring the Anchors Aweigh Band”. (B)
Day 10: Tues., July 10 –This morning is a free morning to relax. This afternoon you will experience the beauty of the fresh water Fjords of Western Brook Pond. (Weather permitting) Please note that in order to reach the docks of the boat tour – we must walk (a fairly level) 3 km walk or approx. 45 minutes OR the Seal Island Boat tour which requires no walking. Day 11: Wed., July 11 –This morning we continue our drive up the Northern Peninsula – known as the Viking Trail to St. Anthony. Much of the spectacular scenery of Gros Morne National Park is visible roadside. This afternoon we will visit the Grenfell Properties including Grenfell House, Grenfell Handicrafts and the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital to see the Jordi Bonet Murals, which tell the story of the people of the Grenfell Mission. Overnight: Hotel North, St. Anthony for our 2 night stay (B & D)
Day 12: Thurs., July 12 –Today we will travel north and visit L’Anse aux Meadows Interpretative Centre. Here is the only known Viking Site in North America and the earliest evidence of Europeans in the western hemisphere. We will also visit Norstead, where actors bring to life a working Viking Village. This afternoon we will experience a 2.5 hour award winning boat tour with Northland Discovery in hopes of iceberg sightings, humpbacks and dolphins. It is a certified vessel with music, onboard biologist & washroom equipped. There will be a special group dinner & evening entertainment with official “Screech In Ceremony” at the hotel to conclude our Newfoundland visit. (B & D)
Day 13: Fri., July 13 –All good things must come to an end. We will travel south along the Viking Trail stopping at the Arches, a natural phenomenon carved over many centuries by the sea. Our travels today allow us to enjoy the beauty of Gros Morne National Park one more time. Today we will fly home from Deer Lake connecting through Montreal and then onto Toronto. We are to arrive at 9:15p.m. Our Hammond coach will pick us up at Pearson International Airport returning to the Tour Office, Barrie & Orillia by approximately 11:30p.m. (B)

An initial deposit of $500.00 is required at time of booking.
A second deposit of $1500.00 is due on April 15 with the balance due in full by May 25, 2012
